Marie Antoinette was sent from her royal home in Austria to the royal castle in France to be married to prince Louis 16. This marriage was to submit the alliance of France and Austria - former enemies. So the fresh faced, 14 year old Marie came into a world that she knew nothing about. It was so much different than her home in Austria. Everyone wore extravagant clothing and hair that "was taller than the sky." Bright colors everywhere - unlike the dark dull colors of Austria.
Prince Louis the 16 was no help to this scared young girl. He was to shy to even meet Marie and said to postpone the wedding until another month! Marie would obey the prince but the consorts told her to stay and that he would come out of his shell. He did but it took a while. They where wed on a beautiful spring day. Expected to make an heir to the throne that night, Louis and Marie had their bed blessed and sent to to their work. But the shy Louis did not want to do anything but sleep. Everyone was suspicious of this...they needed an heir now. This is when most of the gossip started. "Marie was an Austrian Spy, Marie was to busy pleasing other men then to please her fat pig of a husband."
Soon the King Louis died of small pox and the young couple were crowned king and queen of France. Marie soon got bored of her dull life in Versailles so she traveled to Paris to see the opera. Many of the people thought she was to caught up in her music than ruling a country. This led to more and more gossip - along with her love in gambling, and shopping, partying and masked balls. She was reported to have been seen with other men and doing more than just chatting.
7 years later - Marie finally gave birth to her first child. A beautiful little girl whom she named after her mother - Marie Therese. Still the gossip wouldn't stop - no matter how hard Marie tried. "Queen of debt" the villagers called her.
She gave birth to 2 other children - 1 of them dying at a young age. Still gambling and partying - she payed no attention to the people. Thinking it would all stop after a while. After all - she did give to charities and helped with the starving villagers...but it didn't stop. Mobs of hundreds came to Versailles screaming and ranting for the King and Queen. The mobs wouldn't stop - and it was then that the young couple knew they must flee with there children far away from it all. After all this was the French Revolution - most everyone was dying at that time and the royal family must be protected.
They were found...the royal family was found!!! It was all rumor but all true. Marie and her family were being held in one of the worst dungeons - Marie - was deprived of her children...her son died from starvation. Louis was beheaded by the guillotine and 5 months later so was Marie.
Marie Antoinette did not deserve to die. She was only a young girl living the life she never had - after all she was expected to grow up at age 14. She was a good wife - very understanding of her husband, and a loving devoted mother. It took the guards 2 hours to make her let them take her children. Once they threatened to kill them she let them go. Nobody seemed to notice her good side - the caring, loving, understanding, and devoted side of Marie Antoinette - the last queen of France.
